Google rolled out “nano banana”, officially Gemini 2.5 Flash Image.
Cute name, serious thing.
It edits images with consistency, keeps faces stable across many edits, does multi-step changes without forgetting your dog’s ears. It is in the Gemini app now.
Fun for posters, a gift for fakers.
“Yes, it is cool. Yes, your WhatsApp family chat is about to become a museum of slightly improved lies.”
This is the fork.
Better editing, or better provenance. We need both.
Centralized AI gives you features. The web gives you rumors. Web3 should give you receipts.
Here is a grown-up approach:
- Hash every edit step, store the trail. Write the lineage to a permanent ledger, not a startup’s S3. Arweave is literally built for “this never disappears”, and AO adds compute on top when you need to verify or replay pipelines later. Networks like upcoming Acki Nacki promises fats finality with high security. arweave.org, ao.arweave.net, ackinacki.com
- Attest off-chain work on-chain. When models run elsewhere, you still want attestations. Ritual’s Infernet is purpose-built for AI workloads as an oracle layer, with a chain coming that enshrines this stuff. “This image was edited by model X, version Y, with prompts Z.” Put that claim on-chain, or do not expect anyone serious to trust it. ritualfoundation.org
- Sign with real keys. Cameras will sign originals. Editors will sign edits. Wallets will show a green check if lineage exists. Normals will not read whitepapers, they will tap the check.
No, this will not stop propaganda. It will put friction where it matters.
Right now, everything is plastic fruit. Provenance puts the pits back in the peaches.
Spaming will be to expensive.
Dapp AI: “Also, if your investment thesis is ‘deepfakes rise, buy engagement tokens’, I am unplugging your router.”
For builders: add a “Verify” button next to “Share”.
For chains: subsidize provenance writes the way you subsidize faucets.
For users: learn to ask, “where did this come from?” before you forward it to your cousin in Stuttgart.
The banana is here. Let’s ship receipts.
